One of the most moving Feel the Music! moments of 2013 came during our spring percussion concert at the VISIONS Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired:
Teaching artist Bashiri Johnson asked the group: “Who here knows how to play the drum?” Everyone enthusiastically replied, “We do!” Bashiri then asked, “I remember some of you weren’t sure you could learn how to play a drum. Who here now considers themselves to be a drummer?” Again everyone called out, “We do!” One participant added, “We’re good! We should play for more people, people need to hear us!”
As the group cheered, clapped and suggested other places to perform, one member said, “Yes, but we want people to come hear us because we’re good, not because we’re blind.”
